Pointing out cookies
Obligation according to GDPR
Cookies are files that the browser stores on the user’s computer.
They are used to recognize users and store, for example, the settings that the user has made on a website, which pages have been clicked on or what has been purchased.
With the help of cookies, it is possible to temporarily store items in a shopping cart or display personalized advertising.
As soon as your website uses Google Analytics, Google Maps is integrated as a route planner or a shopping cart is used, cookies are also stored on the user’s computer by your website – and users must be informed of this in accordance with the GDPR.
Website operators are therefore obliged to explain when cookies are used, what data is stored and to what extent the data is passed on to third parties.
The legally safest way is currently to obtain the user’s consent to the storage of cookies using a consent tool.
This should be done by means of a cookie notice on the first visit to the site.
This should list exactly what data is involved and the user must be informed in detail about which services set cookies and transfer data.
No data transfer may take place before the user has given their consent.
The information text should also make it clear that consent can be withdrawn at any time.
The privacy policy must also contain a detailed section on the cookies used.
There are various online tools for creating cookie notices that can be individually configured.
